Students encouraged to sign up for Spring Blood Drive

The 2019 Spring Blood drive will take place Thursday, March 28. Students who are over 16 years old can sign up to participate during all lunch periods beginning today, Monday March 18 through Wednesday, March 20.

Blood donation counts as a work of mercy, and all eligible students are highly encouraged to participate.

“It’s a really easy way to make a positive contribution. It’s not painful,” junior Ellie Taube said, who participated in last spring’s blood drive. “Plus, you get free food.”

St. Pius X hosts two blood drives with the American Red Cross each school year, one in the fall and one in the spring. The blood drive in September collected 164 units of blood, by far exceeding the original goal of 150 units. The American Red Cross estimates that for every unit of blood given three lives are saved, which means St. Pius saved 492 lives.

“My mom is a nurse so she volunteers at our blood drive,” said senior Ella Cate Hungeling, who plans on signing up to donate. “It’s fun to see her doing a job that helps so many people.”
