Volunteer opportunities available to complete Works of Mercy

Two things are for certain this year for St. Pius X students. First, this year has been incredibly hard. Second, someone has always had it worse. That being said, it is imperative that the St. Pius community gives back.
With COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, it has been challenging for students to find ways to provide for the less fortunate, but it is still important for students to fulfill their Works of Mercy requirement in both a safe and rewarding fashion.
Mercy Care provides volunteers with an abundance of opportunities to give back at their Chamblee location, a five-minute drive from St. Pius. Mercy Care is a volunteer-run clinic that provides free medical care to patients, but they also need volunteer help behind the scenes. At Mercy Care, you can assist with special events like COVID-19 testing or making meal kit donations at home. All you need is a friend or two to compile the supplies, and when you are done, just drop them off at a designated location at Mercy Care’s campus.
St. Vincent De Paul works closely with the Archdiocese to collect food supplies, but due to the pandemic, their need for volunteers is higher now than ever before. St. Vincent De Paul’s mission is to distribute food and resources to those in need. Right now, they are looking for volunteers to help with Food Pantry Distribution and Food Pantry Driving. Both of these opportunities are available in a variety of locations such as Chamblee, Duluth, Marietta, and Stone Mountain.
Boys and Girls Clubs across the Metro Atlanta area are looking for volunteers to give back and better the lives of kids. Students can mentor a younger kid as a “big brother or sister”through a variety of opportunities like coaching sports teams, helping with school work, and teaching a fun new hobby. This activity is perfect for students who enjoy helping others and interacting with young children.
The Ronald McDonald House has partnered with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to provide food, comfort, and lodging for the families of CHOA patients. They are always looking for volunteers to cook meals, make snacks, clean up around the house, or organize fun activities. Your service helps keep the families close to their children and fulfills the mission of the foundation.
Youth Group Leaders at Local Parishes (OLA , St. Jude, IHM, etc.)
The majority of students at Pius come from local feeder schools and often are still members at these parishes. If you are looking for a way to become more involved in your parish community, becoming a Youth Group leader is the perfect way to become more involved and fulfill your Work of Mercy requirement.
Don’t forget! Every St. Pius student needs to submit their completed Work of Mercy form to Campus Ministry through Google Forms by Monday, May 3.
