The St. Pius X community enjoyed what is hopefully a new tradition on Thursday, April 28: an alumni teacher vs. senior basketball game. While the counselors hosted a teacher vs. teacher basketball tournament at an assembly in May 2019, Director of Alumni Mrs. Karoline Brennan and the Alumni Office was responsible for this year’s fun event to coincide with the seniors’ alumni breakfast that morning.

“We wanted to incorporate the game into a morning celebrating the seniors while also including the alumni faculty and staff playing along,” Mrs. Brennan said. “The administration hopes this event becomes [a] tradition in which [future students] look forward to.”

After the Class of 2022 enjoyed their breakfast in the courtyard, they headed to the gym with the rest of the student body to watch their classmates take on the teachers.

The student team consisted of seniors Owen McCurdy, Alex Possert, Eamonn Kenah, Jacob Hull, Carter Loflin,  David DeWitt, Alexa Kenah, Anna Maloof, Rose Porter, and Neve Thanner.

“Owen chose all the people to play, among seniors on Student Council along with some other friends,” Porter said. “I thought it was going to be so funny to play against the teacher, and it was exactly that!”

The opposing team consisted of alumni teachers Mr. Michael Abbott (‘08), Mr. Will Cloyd (‘08), Ms. Ashley Curlette (‘02), Mrs. Katie Stilson (‘00), Mr. Chris Hill (‘86), Mr. Aaron Parr (‘06), Mr. Kevin Ksionzyk (‘05), Ms. Ann Marie Edwards (‘96), Mr. Matt Lammers (‘74), Mrs. Mary Pat Martin (‘86), Mrs. Molly Wack (‘06), and Mrs. Mary Beyer (‘82), who were all lead under the leadership of head coach Ms. Kristin Kramer (‘98). Managers included Mrs. Amy Williams (‘85) and Mrs. Jenniffer Kapp (‘94).

Retired athletic director Mr. Mark Kelly (‘70) made a guest appearance as the MC of the event who helped get the crowd excited with his fun introductions and commentary.

Both teams got off to a slow start, but the senior team eventually took the lead and never let go. They went on to win the game 20-15, a closer contest than many expected. Halftime included a teacher dance video that the yearbook staff put together, but the real fireworks happened near the end of the game when Coach Kramer got a technical foul from the ref. She knocked over a chair and threw off her suit jacket as she stormed off the court.

“[The game] was so much…it was one the highlights of my senior year,” Porter said. “I think for next year they should make the game longer because everyone playing and watching enjoyed it so much!”

Coach Parr said he hoped it was “a memory the seniors and underclassmen will never forget.”

The game was a fun way for the seniors to end their final week of classes and a nice break from classrooms for everyone in attendance.
