Christmas music streaming around the world spikes on November 1. However, data from the US shows a peak on November 13, a full two weeks later. Some people wait until Thanksgiving; others don’t listen at all. I can’t help but wonder… when is the best time to embrace the holiday season? After much deliberation, I’ve ranked the times to start listening to Christmas music below. Take a look, and see if you agree!
#1 When Mariah Carey Defrosts (November 1)
If the queen herself says it’s tiiiiiiime, I honestly can’t argue with that logic. Considering her 2023 defrosting video has nearly 10 million views and counting on YouTube, Mariah clearly has a chokehold on the Christmas music industry. In fact, she earns $3 million every Christmas season. (Talk about a holiday bonus!) Anyway, if you really want to put more dollars in her pocket, listen away. I won’t stop you.
#2 When Starbucks Releases their Holiday Drinks (November 2)
Look– I can’t even be upset about this one. How am I supposed to sip my steaming hot peppermint mocha with whipped cream (which is in a RED HOLIDAY CUP, by the way) and not put some Christmas songs on in the background? If you want to support your favorite corporate monopoly, this is a great way to do it!
#3 After Thanksgiving (November 24)
One holiday ends, another begins. This should make the most sense, in theory. But… if you’re like me, and you celebrate an early Christmas with one side of the family during Thanksgiving… waiting until after just doesn’t really work. I have complete respect for these people; I’m just not one of them.
#4 December 1
If it makes you happy to contain Christmas within the month of December, then go for it. But I have to say there’s something a bit boring about it… robotic, even. It’s like you Googled the most socially acceptable time to start listening to Christmas music. I think you could do better.
#5 All Year Round
I’m convinced that people who listen to Christmas music year-round are probably on the verge of a mental breakdown. After all, the friends I know who listen to Christmas music in the summer are (and I hope they won’t read this) also very prone to bursting into tears at any moment. It’s probably better to let Christmas be a holiday, not a lifestyle.
#6 Never (Grinch)
You seem like a very sad person.
