Ms. Martha Rummel, a beloved substitute teacher at St. Pius X, was unexpectedly thrown back into being a full-time for several weeks in January. She previously had a career as a high school math and science teacher in Michigan. Students who once knew her as their favorite substitute teacher now recognized her as their new math teacher.
“Because I already knew so many of the students I teach now, it was an easy transition back into full-time teaching,” Ms. Rummel said.
Growing up in a small town in Michigan, Ms. Rummel spent a lot of time with her two sisters, brothers, and cousins.
“We grew up near my cousins, so we were all very close and still keep in touch today,” she said.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Ms. Rummel started teaching in 1986 at Horizons School in Michigan until 2017. She has specialized in Algebra and Chemistry over the years. Her substitute position at St. Pius began in 2018.
“I love interacting with the students,” she said. “It’s always amazing to witness their understanding and newfound confidence in their school work.”
Transitioning to her current role, she noted the challenges she has experienced with the technology. “I love teaching because I’ve been out of it for a little while, but I am still getting used to Canvas,” she said.
Outside of the classroom, Ms. Rummel enjoys gardening, walks, and puzzles. Her love for travel has taken her to exotic destinations, including Costa Rica, where she loved seeing the rainforests and the southwestern United States. She has also explored deserts, the Navajo Reservation, Canyon Deshay, and Monument Valley.
While she appreciates warm destinations, skiing is one of her favorite hobbies. “I love to ski, but there’s not much skiing around here,” she said.
While Ms. Rummel won’t be hitting the slopes anytime soon, she has an excited bunch of students waiting for her to be their substitute teacher again.
