On April 19, the much-anticipated “The Tortured Poets Department” was released at midnight as Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album. Being the mastermind Swift is, she left Swifities jaw-dropped when just two hours later, she announced the surprise of an additional 15 songs, “The Anthology.” Having won Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day, you have to ask yourself which songs are the best on the album. Here, I have ranked my top 10 songs based on lyrics, style, and catchiness.
10. But Daddy I Love Him
Her poetic writing of “sanctimoniously performing soliloquies” combined with an upbeat tune is what put this song at the number ten spot. With its humorous line, “I’m having his baby,” which had all Swifties going crazy as they listened to this song for the first time, this track is the perfect demonstration of excellent songwriting and music production.
9. The Tortured Poets Department
As the title of the album, I just had to include this track in the top ten. And honestly, I think it belongs here whether or not it was the name of the album. Once again, Swift hits us with her extremely talented songwriting abilities. I love the way she goes into descriptive detail about her relationships, and at the same time keeps Swifties on their toes wondering who the song is about.
8. Fortnight
With its hyperbolic lyrics and captivating beat, the first single is not surprisingly one of my favorites. I wasn’t too thrilled when I heard Post Malone was collaborating with her on this song because I thought it was such a weird duo, but shockingly, I like their two voices together. I think this is one of the songs on the album where Swift does a perfect ratio of telling the story of her relationships while creating a song that fans will enjoy.
7. The Alchemy
While the lyrics are not my favorite, the good flow and fact that this song is about Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce make up for it. Not only the fact that it’s about Kelce, but the way she sings about how in love she is with him makes me scream with joy. I’ve always supported Swelce, but this song made me fall in love with the couple even more. As long as they stay together, I would love to see more songs like this one on her next album.
6. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
This absolute banger has been my wake-up song for the past two weeks. The way Swift belts out “toys” so perfectly makes me have chills every time I hear it. It honestly is such a great song: the message, the lyrics, the vocals. The only reason I didn’t rank this one higher is because, in my personal opinion, there are better songs on the album than this.
5. loml
Through her vulnerable lyrics, Swift expresses her feelings of betrayal, anger, and grief after her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn. So was he the love of her life? Or loss of her life? The fact that Swift never calls him “the love of her life,” makes me think that this is a true heartbreak song.
4. So Long, London
My favorite slow track of the album, “So Long, London” once again is about her past relationship with British actor, Joe Alwyn. Listening to the lyrics, I can almost feel Swift’s pain of letting go. I love a good song that makes me feel my feelings which is why I think I like this song so much. Yes, it’s depressing, but in my opinion, some of the saddest songs are some of the best songs.
3. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
AKA Swift’s best bridge ever! This seems to be one of those songs where it would be cathartic if you screamed this at the top of your lungs during a late-night drive. The beat is also worth noting. I like how it starts slow and then gradually increases to give a sort of rising anger feeling. And for those who think it doesn’t deserve to be number three, give it a second chance because it most definitely does.
2. Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?
It’s insane how much this song gives me Reputation vibes. Maybe it’s an easter egg that Reputation TV is coming soon. Anyway, this chorus is phenomenal. Listening to this queen compare her life to being in the circus left me speechless. Her defiant and resilient tone in this song is beyond inspiring and makes me love this woman even more.
1. I Can Do It With a Broken Heart
Coming in at number one, we have what I’d like to call the new Taylor Swift anthem. There’s nothing better than sad lyrics with an uplifting beat. It’s like “Bejeweled” had a depressed younger sister. The line “I cry a lot, but I am so productive, it’s an art,” has blown up across social media platforms with many people noting how they relate to it. While it is sad to hear that this is how Swift feels on the inside, I think her resilience shows fans that if she can overcome her struggles, they can too.
Disclaimer: These rankings are subject to change within the next 24 hours as my opinions of the songs are constantly alternating. I understand that I have left out a few fan favorites like “Down Bad,” but don’t come at me. It is extremely hard to choose my top ten out of 31 songs.
