This year’s New York Fashion Week (September 6 – September 11) brought a variety of new styles, from country streetwear to monochrome high fashion. Here are some of this year’s biggest trends and our takes on them:
High Fashion
First, let’s talk about “high” fashion (basically whatever’s on the runways).

Are these designs watching you? Many of the high fashion outfits of the week featured handprints or eyes, lending an eerie feel to the clothing. The black, gold, and silver of these outfits also make these outfits feel simple and elegant. Blazers also add to the more boxy look that has been so popular this year.
Most of the designs are flowy and either monochrome or full of way too many patterns. Lots of pinks, yellows, and other
bright colors are featured on the outfits along with some mossy greens and blacks. The use of animal print also calls back to its raging popularity in the 200s. There was even an outfit that kind of looked like a cricket. Even floral patterns were very popular this year on many of the dresses.

The future is here, and it’s all science fiction. Lovers of the fantastical worlds of Dune and Star Wars won’t be able to deny the strong influences the dystopias have had on this year’s
fashion week. From sweeping Jedi robes to utilitarian combat-wear reminiscent of Timothee Chalamet’s character Paul Atreides, the models seemed to step out of another world and into ours.
(Is it ironic that our high fashion now resembles the Capitol citizens from The Hunger Games? Maybe.)
Bags are out– baggy clothes are in. You won’t catch a runway model in tight-fitting anything this year. The more oversized, the better. Stylists are focusing more on functional clothing– rain jackets and ponchos rather than elaborate dresses and suits.
Monochrome seems like the way to go as well, with a majority of looks featuring either all-black or all-white. This draws more attention to the design of the outfit itself, rather than its color.
Street Fashion
It’s not just the runways that are drawing the world’s attention. Check out some of New York’s best street fashion trends.

Jewelry is the name of the game. The key for most outfits is accessories. And not just a couple of rings or maybe a simple necklace, no no no you better SPARKLE. Sometimes the amount of jewelry is a little bit excessive. Jewelry; however, allows people to make their outfits more unique or even to feature their own designs.
Many of the participants in New York Fashion Week are themselves designers or stylists and like to wear their own custom pieces. Nothing says fabulous quite like wearing something you designed yourself.
Most regular people wear basically all-thrifted outfits. Most of the time, at least one piece of the outfit is designer. Many thrifted items are unique as well, which gives everyone’s outfits a new spin. The future may be here, but the clothes might just also be a blast from the past. Many people love to thrift their outfits, and not only look good but save money while doing it.

The “urban cowboy” trend allows for another former fashion faux-pas to make its comeback– the denim on denim look. Larry Gashi, dubbed the “Brooklyn Cowboy,” fuses country and R&B in his music as well as his outfits. If they’re not wearing cowboy boots, you’ll find fashion- oriented New Yorkers donning their favorite pair of combat boots or Doc Martens.
Sci-fi isn’t just for the runway– it’s present in the futuristic chrome of the sunglasses that everyone who’s anyone seems to be wearing in New York– actors, musicians, and influencers alike. Whether it’s a two-dollar thrift or a two-thousand dollar design doesn’t seem to matter– these fashionistas are more concerned about nailing their cool, nonchalant look.
All in all this year’s fashion week was a total success. While we may be heading into a dystopian future AT LEAST we have our cowboy boots and baggy clothes to get us through it.
