In 2014, then-sophomore Sally Smith decided St. Pius X desperately needed a book club. She enlisted librarian Mrs. Wilcauskas’s help to start the club.
It took a while for the club to pick up, but when Smith was in her senior year, the club finally had a small, consistent group of students.
Mrs. Wilcauskas credits the book club’s success to the lack of academic focus.
“Once it kind of became less academic in nature, it became more palatable to everybody.” she said. She wanted the club to be open to everyone regardless of how vigorously they read.
Eventually, after many of the club members graduated from St. Pius, the book club came to a stop. This year, though, Mrs. Wilcauskas decided to start it up again. Just like the previous book club, she wanted it to be accessible to all students, which is why she started to add more audiobooks on SORA; she understood that not everyone is able to read a physical book.
Another chance is that the book club is open to all teachers and students.
“It used to be that we didn’t let teachers come unless they were actually invited by a student from the book club,” said Mrs. Wilcauskas.
This year’s first book club meeting is March 20, 2025, and they are reading Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly.
If interested you can join the group in the library directly after school until 4:00 pm or you can email Mrs. Wilcauskas.
