Science teacher Mr. Davis Sabino has been wanting to take his Environmental Science classes on a field trip for the past three years. Yet, time after time, COVID shut it down. Now, for the first time, the class visited Peachtree Farm and the Atlanta Zoo in an experience that allowed them to reflect on conservation, agriculture, and even job opportunities for the disabled.
According to their website, Peachtree Farm aims to “produce locally grown produce for the metro Atlanta and North Georgia area while providing job opportunities for individuals with disabilities.” Located in Norcross, it was founded in 2021 by Mark and Mary Twiner. They are the parents of twins Joe and Nick (Class of 2014) as well as their younger sister Quinn, who has Down syndrome.
Students on the field trip got to work alongside the farmers, weeding the plots, watering the plants, and helping set up a plant pot fundraiser.
“It’s a beautiful thing,” Mr. Sabino said. “The weather was perfect. There were so many beautiful things going on.”
When asked if he planned to return with next year’s class, Mr. Sabino replied with an absolute yes.
“There’s other local forums we could have gone to,” he explained. “But I wanted our students to have that opportunity of speaking to the Catholic faith, the way we should dignify everyone regardless of their abilities.”
