Trick-or-treating got a new look this year at St. Pius X thanks to the National Honor Society, who hosted a trunk-or-treat event and service opportunity for the local Dresden Elementary community. Held on the afternoon of October 28, different student clubs and organizations decorated their car trunks, passed out candy, played games, and painted faces. Themes included a pirate ship, Plymouth Rock, sharks, and cobwebs
“Children showed up in costumes, and had a safe, fun way to trick-or-treat,” said NHS moderator Mrs. Leyanna Messick.
She also said that the idea for the event started after COVID hit because NHS couldn’t host a main service event for Dresden Elementary, like their annual book drive. They also wanted to be able to continue giving back to a community that doesn’t have the same resources as other schools.
“Dresden, unfortunately, does not have enough parent volunteers, so where elementary schools normally have a fall carnival or fall event, Dresden normally does not have outside help to put on an event,” said Mrs. Messick. “This year, that’s what we [were] trying to do and create memories with their elementary school.”
