The Beta Club is one of the newest groups at St. Pius X this year. New Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Amanda Myrick wanted to bring the organization to St. Pius after having experience with the club at previous schools, and it emphasizes leadership, character, achievement, and service.
Starting in the second semester of your freshman year, any student with a GPA of 88% or higher is contacted, asked to fill out an application, and reviewed to be accepted into the club. Once they are accepted, students will be required to maintain their GPA, which will be checked with every report card, and participate in service projects to give back to the community.
Beta Club will have bi-weekly meetings that will alternate between fun activities and planning for future service projects and events. Mrs. Myrick said having social activities for the club is important because “it gives them a chance to get to know each other and build that camaraderie, which we want everyone to have.”
Every fall, Beta Club members attend the National Beta Club Convention in Savannah, Georgia.
“At the national convention we have different activities that students can compete in to win prizes and awards. They also can win plaques and trophies to bring back to school,” she said. “Some of the contests are debate, reading bowl, spelling bee, quiz bowl, living literature, social media contests, and painting.”
If St. Pius students score first through third in any category, next June they will be able to go to either Tennessee or Kentucky to compete for scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $20,000.
Beta Club also offers opportunities for diploma seals and honor stoles.
“If a senior achieves their 25 service hours, and they’re actively involved in Beta Club, and they do different events throughout the year, they will get a diploma seal and honor stoles,” explained Mrs. Myrick.
With over 100 applicants this year, Beta Club will surely become a valuable part of the St. Pius community.
