The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award (HOBY) is one of the most prestigious awards at St. Pius X. Voted on by the faculty, it recognizes a sophomore student who exhibits the most leadership potential. This year’s winner is Sariah Smith.
When Smith received the award on December 8, 2023, she said she was completely surprised and thought she was in trouble when she was pulled out of class to go to the principal’s office.
“I was kind of scared because I thought I did something wrong. President Parr was there, Mr. Eaglen was there, and Dr. Simpson was also there. Then they told me ‘Hey, you won the HOBY award!’” Smith said.
Founded by American actor Hugh O’Brian, the main purpose of the award is to promote leadership skills with high school students and give them a platform for free thinking.
Smith and other winners from the state of Georgia are invited to attend a seminar this summer at the University of Georgia. Smith doesn’t know what to expect at the seminar, but she is excited for the opportunity.
Previous HOBY recipient senior Luna Ocha Hernandez enjoyed her experience at the seminar.
“It pushed me to talk to more people, expand my horizons, and speak to everyone more freely,” she said.
As for Smith, she’s just “happy to be able to meet new people.”
