At the annual Fine Arts Assembly on Friday, March 3, students from the Dance, Theater, Music Production, Band, Chorus, Visual Arts, and Guitar Programs showcased their talents for the whole school.
The Concert Jazz Band opened the assembly with two upbeat songs, “It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing” by Duke Ellington, and the Brazilian Bossa song “Desafinado.” The Symphonic Band followed with “Byzantine Dances,” a song by Carol Brittin Chamber with a gypsy vibe.
Visual Arts students showed a slideshow of their work throughout the school year, and the Theater Program sang “Under the Sea” from the spring musical “The Little Mermaid.”
Playing Prince Eric, junior Zach Eichenberg said, “We had a performance the night before so our practice for the assembly was that morning, but thankfully we had done our work on ‘Under the Sea.’ All the choreography and music was thoroughly ingrained in us, so we just had to take it from the stage to the gym floor. As for the characters not on stage, we were told to stand still and sing the song, but we added some snaps and swaying to make it more fun for us.”
The Dance Company kept up the energy and excitement with their performance of “Dance!” which featured a compilation of songs from Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston, and Jamiroquai.
“We started learning this mid-December, and we completed it two weeks before the assembly,” junior Maggie Griffin said. “The day of the assembly, we went to the dance room to get dressed and then we ran the dance a few times and performed.” She added that she “was a lot less nervous this year than last year.”
Chorus then took center stage and sang “Lakeside Lullaby,” one of their favorites, and junior Avery Reagan sang a solo of “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele.
For the Music Production’s performance, they turned off the lights in the gym and gave glow sticks to the seniors while they played their own remixes of songs such as Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.”
Finally, the guitarists played a medley of popular songs from artists such as Blink-182 and Natasha Bedingfield, and students including juniors Patrick Davey and MT Carter provided vocals.
The Fine Arts Assembly is one of the best of the school year, and this one also lived up to the hype.
“I liked watching all the arts come together and perform live in front of the school,” said junior Lexi Andino. For more information about upcoming Fine Arts events, click here.
