The band program traveled to Disney World last month, and had the opportunity to record Disney songs and enjoy a few of the theme parks.
At Disney’s Imagination Campus, just a few minutes outside Epcot, they participated in the Soundtrack Sessions Instrumental workshop and worked with a professional musician to sight-read songs from popular movies such as “Mary Poppins,” “Mulan,” and “Aladdin.” Sight-reading involves playing sheet music without any practice beforehand.
“Sight-reading was very difficult and nerve-wracking, but it drove people to play better,” said sophomore tuba player Tori Mallory.
They also got to record “A Whole New World” to the magic carpet ride scene in “Aladdin.”
Band Director Mr. Ian LaBreck hoped students benefited from working with a professional musician.
“They learned what the show musician environment is like and how that translates to the real world,” he said.
Sophomore trombone player Nicole Amy added, “I think it was really interesting to be able to interact with someone who is a professional in the show music field.”
In addition to recording music, the students also visited the different theme parks, saw the musical show “Fantasmic,” and attended mass at The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary before returning home.
Thanks to this opportunity, the band students were able to get a better understanding of the show music field, the challenges that come with it, and what it takes to succeed in a professional music setting.
