On Saturday October 24 from 4:00-6:00 pm, St. Pius X’s National Honor Society (NHS) brought Halloween to the senior lot with its annual Trunk-or-Treat, a fun-filled event for local families to enjoy Halloween activities and sweet treats.
Organized by NHS moderators Mrs. Messick, Mrs. Blackburn, and Dr. Hall, along with the NHS Trunk-or-Treat committee, the event featured decorated car trunks from school clubs and NHS members. Some trunk themes included Spiderman Waffle House, Inside out, Tailgating, and more. Mrs. Messick explained, “Clubs, organizations, NHS members, [decorated] their trunks and different themes with then decorate costumes and they’ll have candy for the kids.”
This year, the Trunk-or-Treat welcomed children from nearby Dresden Elementary and Montclair Elementary schools, as well as St. Pius faculty and their families.
“If we’re doing it, we might as well make it a big Pius community event too,” Mrs. Messick said.
To avoid the heat, organizers moved the trunks to a shadier area of the senior lot to avoid last year’s struggles with melting candy and overheated guests. “Last year, we had trunks that were facing the sun, and so this year, [we tried] to keep the trunks in more of the shade so the candy [didn’t] melt and people don’t melt because it was super hot last year,” Mrs. Messick explained.
Reflecting on the event’s impact, junior Emily Morris said “It was rewarding to see the smiles on the kids’ faces because it gave them a safe and fun space to celebrate Halloween and I loved being part of something that made their day a little brighter. It shows how a small gesture can have a big impact on the community”
With creative costumes, themed trunks, and plenty of candy, this year’s Trunk-or-Treat was a hit, giving children a safe space to celebrate Halloween while bringing the community together for an afternoon of fun.
