Let’s be honest, we’ve all wondered what it would be like on a movie or television set. These days, however, you don’t have to become a famous actor to experience working in the film industry.

Band Director Mr. Chad Paetznick got the opportunity to be an extra in a number of projects this year, including season three of “Stranger Things,” and two movies, the comedy “Little,” and the sequel “Undercover Brother II.” While many students might not be aware of his accomplishments outside of the classroom, Mr. Paetznick said he first entered show business while working at Paulding High School 15 years ago.

“I was working as assistant band director,” said Mr. Paetznick, “and [the school marching band] got asked to be in the second ‘Dumb and Dumber’ movie.”

This experienced piqued Paetznick’s interest in acting. Last year, the St. Pius X marching band responded to an open call for “Stranger Things” season three, which was filmed in Atlanta and set to air on Netflix this summer. However, only Mr. Paetznick received a callback, although not for the scene they auditioned for, as casting directors were looking for college age kids.

“After that [audition], I started getting emails called availability checks,” explained Mr. Paetznick.

An availability check informs people who are looking for opportunities to become extras in shows or movies about potential roles in the area and any requirements.

Ultimately, Mr. Paetznick said he was offered a role as an extra on “Stranger Things.” First, he was cast as a mechanic, and then later was cast again as a moviegoer in a scene filmed at Gwinnett Place Mall. Inside of the mock theater, the directors gave him two opportunities to be on camera with Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington) and Maya Hawke (Robin), first in the hallway outside the theater and then again in the actual theater.

“I was lucky enough to be put right in the front row, right next to main actors,” Mr. Paetznick said. “We shot that one scene for about two-and-a-half hours.”

Although Mr. Paetznick has yet to get a speaking role, he also got to be an extra in upcoming movies “Undercover Brother II” and “Little.” While filming “Little,” Mr. Paetznick even got the opportunity to take on a specialty role, where he physically interacted with the main actress, Issa Rae, when she stole a phone out of his hand.

According to Mr. Paetznick, he “wasn’t really trying to get all these roles. It just sort of happened.”

Mr. Paetznick said he was very excited for his scenes to come out, especially since “Stranger Things” is so popular.

“It’s going to be crazy to see myself on screen,” said Mr. Paetznick.

Over spring break, Mr. Paetznick hopes to find more work as an extra in other upcoming TV shows and movies.
