The winter sports season will wrap up soon, and all four programs are gearing up for region and state competitions. Each team has several highlights this season, and some individual athletes are having their best seasons yet. Below are re-caps of each winter sports team’s season so far.
Boys Basketball
The team will wrap up their regular season with Senior Night on February 9 against North Atlanta. They are ranked third in 6A with a 13-5 record, including going undefeated in region play. They also have two big wins against rivals Blessed Trinity (78-54) and Marist (56-44). Junior Aiden Portee scored a career-high 22 points in a 82-38 win over Lakeside, and sophomore Harris Reynolds had a career-high 31 points in a 90-87 win over Riverwood in double overtime. The team will be going for their eighth straight region title in February, hopefully followed by a deep run in the state playoffs.
Girls Basketball
Like the boys, the girls will end the regular season on Friday, February 9. They are 5-1 in region play with an overall record of 9-8 as of January 19. Two of their leaders on the court this year are freshman Sofia Pihera (averaging 10.1 points and 3.5 assists per game) and junior Annabella Sheridan (averaging 10.1points and 7.2 rebounds per game).
They’ve also advanced to the Sweet 16 in the state playoffs four of the past five seasons.
Swim and Dive
Divers are preparing for the state meet on Wednesday February 6, and the swimmers will compete at state on February 9. The girls have an overall record of 5-1 this season and the boys 4-2. The program has had a very successful run over the past several seasons. Since 2009, the girls have won a state championship (2022) and four runner-up titles (2021, 2019, 2015, and 2009). The boys have four state championships (2019, 2018, 2017, and 2014) and one second-place finish (2016). Combined , the girls and boys have 74 individual state qualifying times and 42 relay times. Highlights this season include senior Zach Sutter setting the pool record in the 100 butterfly at Marist as well as both the boys & girls beating a tough Greater Atlanta Christian team.
Wrestling
The team currently has a 18-3 record in dual meets with one regular season meet left on their schedule. The highlight for the team so far was an 84-0 dual meet win against Lakeside-DeKalb on December 20. This is a perfect score and earned the Golden Lions a spot in the National Federation Wrestling Record Book.
Several individual wrestlers placed in tournaments throughout the season, led by senior Gene Smith. He is 28-7 this season and has an overall record of 98-31 throughout his high school career. Smith has also placed at state two times, and he’ll look to do it again February 15-17 at the state traditional tournament at the Macon Coliseum.
