St Pius X established its first-ever ultimate frisbee team this year. The team will be coached by a professional player, Liam Haberfield, who plays on the Atlanta Ultimate Frisbee Team, The Hustle.
Ultimate frisbee is a 7v7 sport that is regulated in-game by players themselves- calling plays, fouls, etc. It is a club-sanctioned sport and will be co-ed.
Ultimate Frisbee has been an idea for years, according to Assistant Enrollment Director Mrs. Molly Wack, the woman behind it all. Mrs. Wack got the idea after multiple parents and families asked her about an ultimate program, since numerous high schools in the area have teams.
“I loved my experience as a high school athlete, and I know Pius has a lot of competitive sports, and ultimate frisbee is a way to get more kids involved,” said Mrs. Wack
Mrs. Wack decided that this would be the year to *toss* this great idea to more people.
Fortunately, we have been gifted with two very experienced players. The two students, freshmen Christian Robb and Alexandro Barillas, have had prior experience playing ultimate.
Robb has played club for a few years and is familiar with the game. “I expect us not to be number one in the state, obviously, but to do pretty well. [The coach] said that [the] first practice went pretty good.” Said Robb.
Liam Haberfield is the coach for our new program and is an experienced player. Haberfield is currently sidelined for the season after suffering an ACL and meniscus tear, allowing him to come coach here.
“I hope people get out there and give it a try, because I think it could be really fun. Honestly, [ultimate frisbee] sounds like it could be something really cool,” said Mrs. Wack
Ultimate Frisbee plans to have a season consisting of club-sanctioned games against some competitive schools, such as Lakeside, Woodward, Chamblee, and more! So far, clinics have been held after school on Seaver Practice Field and Malloof Stadium. Come support or be a part of SPX Ultimate!
