On Friday, March 20, Mike Lutzenkirchen visited St. Pius X to talk about the importance of safe driving and the impact one decision can have on a life. His message was both emotional and inspiring, centered around the story of his son, Phillip Lutzenkirchen, and the mission of the Lutzie 43 Foundation.
Phillip Lutzenkirchen, known as “Lutzie,” was a football player at Auburn University admired not only for his athletic talents but also for his strong character and leadership. In 2014, Phillip tragically lost his life in a car accident involving impaired driving. After his death, Mike Lutzenkirchen turned his grief into purpose by founding the Lutzie 43 Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting safe, responsible driving among young people.
During his visit, Lutzenkirchen emphasised that safe driving is not just about following the rules; it is about making choices that protect yourself and others. He encouraged students to always wear seatbelts, avoid distractions like their phones, and never drive under the influence. One of the key ideas he shared was the importance of accountability and leadership, even in small moments. He challenged the student to step up and make the right decision, even when it is not the easiest decision.
A central part of his message was the “43 Key Seconds” concept, which represents the few seconds it takes to make a decision that can change a life forever. Whether it is choosing to put your phone down, slow down, or speak up when a driver is making an unsafe choice, those seconds matter.
“It reminded me always to wear a seatbelt and make sure to pay attention because you cannot trust other people on the road,” said sophomore Kamryn Callier about the presentation.
Senior Trinity Dorse said, “The guy’s emotional impact on the topic was really sad, but it added strength to his message,” highlighting how the presentation encouraged students to think more seriously about their choices behind the wheel.
Lutzenkirchen’s visit left a lasting impression on students, reminding everyone that driving is a serious responsibility. His story showed that even one choice can have a great lifelong impact, and that each person has the power to make decisions to keep themselves and others safe.
