Think you know what to expect from the St. Pius X girls basketball team this year? Think again. The Lady Lions are off to a blazing start winning five out of their last 6 games, bringing speed, energy, and a new style under first year coach Mr. Kevin Moore. Fans are already buzzing about what this team might accomplish.
Moore has introduced a fresh defensive strategy that’s changing the way the Lady Lions play.
“I think there are [benefits to the new style of play], and I think we have seen this in our games so far,” junior Heidi Beck said.
“He has a whole different style of play, definitely compared to our old coach,” added sophomore Taylor Dixon, we’re playing a lot faster, and we look a lot better this year.”
Team chemistry has been another highlight. Dixon said, “In our game, like the energy on the bench was definitely really supportive, and I’m excited to bring that energy throughout the season.” That positive vibe has helped the Lady Lions gel quickly and play with confidence.
Seniors Jillian Studdard, Parker Lee, Gianna Musci, and Eva Russell have taken on a big leadership role, especially with so many underclassmen stepping into new positions. “They set a really good example for the rest of us,” Sophomore Violet Hornby said. “They’re basically everything,” adds Dixon.
Coach Moore has also focused on teaching the team new basketball strategies. “He’s offered us a lot of new basketball IQ and just like new ways to play the game, different moves to learn,” said Hornby.
And the confidence? It’s real. Beck summed it up perfectly: “If I had to describe this season in one word, it would be confidence.”
If the team continues to play with heart and energy, this season could be one of the most memorable yet. With a new coach, a united roster, and a strong start, the Lady Lions are ready to flip the script, and maybe rewrite it entirely.
The team is currently 11-6. Their next game is Tuesday, January 13 at 6:00 pm vs. North Springs, where they’ll be going for their fifth straight win at home.
