A change in careers can be hard and scary, but for our new athletic director Mr. Joe McCurdy, this transition has felt like coming home. After working for over 30 years at CNN in various production roles for sports programming, the position he now holds is brand new to him, but the school is not. Mr. McCurdy’s four children (Emma ’16, Finn ’18, Maggie ’20, and Owen ’22) are St. Pius X graduates, so he is already very familiar with the Golden Lion community
He officially began serving as athletic director on July 1, 2025, and information hit him like a firehose while learning more about his new job, but he brings with him extensive experience within the world of sports from his time at CNN.
“My branding ability, the ability to get your stories out there, and the athletes’ stories the platform they deserve, is something I’m excited to bring here,” said Mr. McCurdy.
Among the many things he wants to contribute to St. Pius X, he is determined to bring back our student-led broadcasting team that the school hasn’t had for the past few years. He knows the struggle of trying to keep up with a game while watching it from home, and he wants to keep the audience more engaged.
“It makes it such a greater experience when someone is talking to you,” he said.
This effort is part of his larger mission to expand visibility of our sports programs through social media platforms and the athletics website.
Showing up to almost every game on the calendar so far, home or away, Mr. McCurdy is not only driven to help promote our student-athletes but also to support and celebrate the Catholic community he proudly serves.
This strong focus on faith at St. Pius X was an important factor when he and his wife enrolled their children here beginning in 2013. Over the next several years, he saw each of them find their place in the community.
“There’s something for everybody here,” he said. “It feels like family.”
