The Diverse Student Union at St. Pius X is a student-driven organization, unlike any other club, where students of different backgrounds are exposed to opportunities to use their talents to highlight the various cultures within the school community.
This school year, Mrs. Dominguez and Mrs. Bieytes took over as moderators from Ms. Kramer and Mr. Ellis Thomas, who had led the club for five years.
“They did an incredible job building the program and supporting everyone involved while encouraging new ideas, welcoming input, and creating growth opportunities,” Mrs. Dominguez said.
More than 40 students take part in DSU’s welcoming environment as they work year-round on signature events such as the Black History Assembly, Heritage Homecoming, and new events such as La Fiesta Latina. During meetings, they have built a strong sense of community through laughter, dialogue, and memories.
The organization relies on student roles and ideas to focus on investing in students and piloting initiatives such as selecting student leaders, holding open meetings for all students, and conducting closed meetings for event teams to plan, all while working to maintain a structure that builds long-lasting stability for a club where students are pushed to their potential in leadership skills.
“[DSU] is a great way to let students be known [and] have the school see student accomplishments and how great students are,” senior Co-President Noa Rollins said.
DSU has begun its planning for two of the most important events hosted by the club: Heritage Homecoming and the Black History Month Assembly. Students have begun brainstorming ideas, activities, and advertisements for these events, and are invited to be a part of the process. Be on the lookout for their meeting dates in announcements these upcoming weeks!
