From giant peaches to anything and everything that goes wrong at a performance, the Golden Lion thespians set off for the Georgia Theatre Conference on October 15-18th to compete against other schools with their two one-act plays, “James and the Giant Peach” and “The One Act Play That Goes Wrong.”
Senior Lauren Baker and freshman Emma Sophia Cruz won All-Star Cast medals for “James and the Giant Peach” and juniors Audrey Buresh and Dylan Marlar won All-Star Cast medals for “The One Act Play that Goes Wrong.”
The performances have to be 55 minutes or under. Which required Theater Director Mrs. Warren to make cuts whether it be lines, scenes, or even music numbers.
“I mean, it’s always nerve-wracking to hear what the judges are going to say because they do give feedback afterward, and so it’s a little nerve-wracking to see or to hear what they’re going to focus on,” said Mrs. Warren.
While Mrs. Warren worried about the judges and critiques, Technical Director Mr. Keith Cordell, and the tech crew had to worry about the set and how to capture scenes on a blank stage.
“We had to build a giant peach that the students could get on and interact with, that we could also deconstruct for the travel, and that also would not impede on the lighting,” he said.
With the anxiety of competition, students also learned more about themselves and their peers.
Senior Jack O’Donnell said, “I mean, it just opened my eyes on how to be better at acting because we get feedback.”
“I think I became more patient, more appreciative, more respectful to my fellow actors and actresses around me,” said senior Lauren Baker.
Mrs. Warren agreed saying,“But it’s also really a great opportunity for them to learn and for me to learn too, like what should I focus on next time.”
From making friends and going to workshops each person found a way to learn and grow through this amazing opportunity.
