Sixteen percent of homeowners in Roswell, Georgia, face food insecurity in their daily lives, hitting close to home for sophomore Christian Milteer. Recognizing this call to action, Milteer wanted to give back to his community.
As Milteer grew up alongside his mother’s work at The Empowerment Workshop, he was inspired by the significant impact she had on those around her. Her organization provides service opportunities for college students in the Atlanta-metro area, and through working with them, he found his strength in leadership.
With his natural skills of leadership and caring for the community, alongside his love for basketball, Milteer combined the two and successfully organized and hosted the Hoops for Hunger 3v3 High School Tournament and Food Drive at North Fulton High School on October 18, 2025.
“We fed hundreds of families, had a great time as a community, and had two great causes come to feed these people in need,” Milteer said.
This is not Milteer’s first hands-on experience with community service. While focusing on his basketball and academic career, Milteer also manages Christian’s Concessions Court, and he used this experience to coordinate with the local food bank, find sponsors, and collect rewards for the participants.
Although there was no exact number of the proceeds, the success of his tournaments didn’t just come from the strong sense of community during this event, but Milteer also enhanced the event by inviting college basketball players and local political candidates to deliver words of wisdom to the students in attendance. Kids also enjoyed raffle games, Atlanta Hawks ticket giveaways, and a DJ.
“I wanted to give a voice to the voiceless,” Milteer said.
And that’s certainly what Milteer accomplished for both the Roswell and St. Pius X communities.
