Just a short drive from campus, The Rack Athletic Performance Center has become a popular training spot for St. Pius X students. Here, students work to improve their strength, agility, athletic performance, and overall fitness. Unlike other gyms, The Rack focuses on personalized coaching, small-group training, and results-driven workouts, creating an environment centered on commitment and progress. For many students, it is not just a gym; it is a place where they can push themselves and build confidence.
“One thing that sets the rack apart from other gyms is the trainers; they make it a good environment and are very friendly,” said sophomore Eveliina Campbell.
The Rack attracts a wide range of people, including professional, collegiate, and high school athletes, and it is designed to support and help anyone who walks through their doors. This diversity helps create an environment where everyone, regardless of their experience level, feels supported and motivated.
“The people who usually work out there are high school athletes, older adults, and middle schoolers,” said freshman Courtlyn Richard.
A large number of students from St. Pius X regularly train at The Rack. Many focus on strength training exercises such as bench press, deadlifts, and squats, while others work on conditioning, speed, mobility, and sport-specific workouts. Whether they are preparing for a season of simply trying to improve their overall fitness, students use the space to train with purpose and clear goals in mind.
For students starting at the gym, it can be intimidating. However, The Rack emphasizes proper form, consistency, and learning over lifting heavy right away, making it a more approachable place for beginners.
“The biggest piece of advice I would give students who are new to the gym is use less weight for more reps,” said sophomore Audrey Roux.
The welcoming community and mindset are a big part of The Rack’s culture. Even students who have never lifted weights before are encouraged to learn at their own pace, with guidance from coaches and more experienced members.
“If someone has never lifted before, I would tell them that it is a great way to release some stress and take their mind off grades or school. Also, you feel great after, kind of like you just accomplished something,” said junior Jack Randa.
Fitness plays an important role in students’ lives beyond just athletics. Regular training helps students manage stress, stay focused in school, and develop discipline that carries over into other areas of life.
“Fitness is important for students today because of their general and overall health and well-being, mentally and physically,” said St. Pius X Head Athletic Trainer Mr. Gary Shmitt.
Overall, The Rack Performance Gym offers students more than just a place to work out. Structured coaching, small-group training, and a supportive atmosphere give students a way to train with purpose, build confidence, and push themselves toward real results both on and off the field.
