On January 29, the Advanced Guitar Ensemble achieved one of the highest honors a high school ensemble can receive, performing at the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) conference in Athens, Georgia. The talented students showcased their dedication, skill, and passion, representing our school on a prestigious stage and earning recognition among the state’s best music programs.
Only one high school guitar ensemble gets to perform every year, so Advanced Guitar teacher Mr. Patrick Bolin was excited to hear the announcement.
“I was thrilled our students and our school have the opportunity to promote our program” Said Mr. Bolin.
Students also spent months preparing for the conference.
“We figured out about the GMEA when school started in August, then we started learning the pieces and we played most of them in our fall concert,” said senior Charlie Jeanguenat.
But the program at St. Pius X isn’t just like any other guitar ensemble. Along with classical pieces, they also like to play rock.
“I think that’s really what sets our program apart compared to other schools. It’s a lot more fun when we play songs that we actually like,” said senior Buster McCarthy.
“I really enjoy getting to play with my friends, especially when we get to play in front of a crowd,” added senior Sam Laughter.
The experience helped bond the class when finally getting the chance to get out of the classroom.
“It was nice finally getting to perform these pieces, I feel like after practicing for so long and being so serious, it was nice to get out and bond as a class, ” said senior Tillman Smith.
Overall, performing at GMEA was a once in a lifetime opportunity that highlighted the talent and hard work of the Advanced Guitar Ensemble, setting a strong example for future guitar students.
