Sixty-six students in the Diverse Student Union worked together since October to create an assembly honoring, exploring, and celebrating Black culture and history for the 2026 Black History Month Assembly. This year’s program focuses on a hundred years of visual art and history.
“Bonding with the students, getting together, having that safe space, and interacting with students in different ways was definitely my favorite part of this whole process,” said project lead senior Erin Creagh-Chase.
From breakout rooms to consistent communication with teachers, faculty, and students across St. Pius X, meetings brought the community together each week for an hour and a half of collaboration and connection.
“I saw students lead with confidence and serve one another selflessly, put together the assembly with thoughtfulness and care, and support and lift each other during times of high stress and offer comfort when emotions ran high,” said DSU moderator and lead assembly coordinator Mrs. Luz Dominguez. “Some segments of the assembly were heavy, and meetings naturally brought up strong feelings and concerns,”
This assembly not only allowed students to learn about Black history and culture but also gave performers the opportunity to showcase their talents in video production, public speaking, singing, and musical instruments, culminating in a show honoring the origins and evolution of Black culture.
Another project lead, junior Imani Crowder, said, “We took what we wanted to showcase and planned what we should do for this year, while organizing what needed to get accomplished. We put together the fashion show, the dance portion, and the music portion to highlight the theme: A Hundred Years of Black Artistry.”
The St. Pius Black History Month Assembly continues to be a community favorite. Each year, its message is represented in creative and passionate ways.
